Georgia May Jagger as the New Posterchild for Hudson

Jul26

Hudson Jeans, the brand that offers the perfect marriage of London and California style, has just selected their newest muse, Georgia May Jagger. (If the last name sounds familiar, that's because she's the youngest daughter of American model/actress, Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones.)

Her British/American heritage makes her the perfect model for Hudson.

In more Hudson news - the brand is planning to expand their line to include pieces such as the ripped denim jeans and lace-back jeans Jagger wears in the campaign, as well as putting more emphasis on menswear.

Michelle Obama Paints the White House Yellow

Jul25

Not since Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis took Washington by storm with her fashion-forward clothing has a political public figure garnered so much attention for her (or his, as the case may be) style.

And, if you read the paper, watch gossip television, or read fashion sites at all, you know a certain First Lady has been making headlines for quite some time for her fashion choices. Today was no exception.

As First Lady Michelle Obama paid homage to honorees at the 10th anniversary of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards, attendees including design, Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa looked on in amazement.

Decked in a sunshine yellow Michael Kors skirtsuit and lizard-skin pumps, Mrs. Obama looked absolutely stunning as she spoke about her fascination with the advancements of design.

10 Second Wardrobe Makeover: Classy Vintage

Jul20

Dear reLYME,

I recently got my first out-of-college job as a ninth grade teacher. I'm very excited about my new career, but a bit worried about my wardrobe. I always have this vision of teachers wearing hideous, plain clothing. I love wearing vintage, and would love to continue wearing vintage, if possible. But, how can I make it look a bit more grown up and classroom-ready?
-Miss Mod

Dear Miss Mod,

Don't worry your pretty little head: You don't need to surrender your style in order to be an effective teacher. However, since you are a new teacher, you still do have to work hard to impress your administrators, and that often means looking the part of a professional. A teacher myself, I understand the fear that you feel: that one day, you are going to become one of those matronly teachers who wears boringly bland, and often downright, frumpy frocks, but this doesn't have to happen.

The important thing to keep in mind is that you do need to stand apart from your students. If you look too cool, sadly they might regard you as a cool big sister rather than their grownup teacher. (Trust me...this DOES happen.)

So, how to keep your flair for all things vintage, while still looking the part of an educational mastermind?

Trade in the a-line pinafores and jumpers for dresses with a more grown up silhouette. Then, throw a cardigan or blazer over them. Add a pair of tights and some flats or pumps, and voila! You still maintain your style, while mainaining order in the classroom:

Try on some of these dresses for size (all available from Modcloth.com):

Now, go teach your heart out!

Style Icon: Nancy Drew

Jul19

There's no better way to cool down in the July heat than by sitting in the shade with a good mystery novel. And though I prefer something a little more grown up, (i.e.- Raymond Chandler's The Lady in the Lake), sometimes it's fun to reminisce a bit with a classic Nancy Drew novel.

As I've read and reread her mysteries in my lifetime, I'm always struck by the artwork on the covers, and more importantly, Nancy's impeccable taste in fashion.

The consummate professional, Nancy was often seen on the covers of her novels in tailored skirts, form-fitting dresses, and cherry-red shoes.

After all, how effective can a young, teenage detective be if she doesn't look her very best?

Fashion Inspiration: Lady Gaga's Style

Jan28

Lady Gaga has been wowing both the fashionistas and fashion police alike since she first stepped onto the scene. Known for donning outlandish and sometimes microscopic attire, the native New Yorker proves she definitely has an eye for style.

Her signature dyed-blonde hair with straight-cut bangs is its own accessory. Her outfits do most of the talking for her.

Though as jaw dropping as her ensembles might be, it is entirely possible to get a Lady Gaga-inspired look  by remembering it's all about colors, patterns, and statement pieces.

Episode 3: Saved by the Bell's Lisa Turtle

Jan18

Lisa Turtle was known as Bayside's most boy-crazy fashionista. Although one of her top priorities was ignoring the advances of her high school admirer and friend, Samuel "Screech" Powers, she also had a few extra-curricular interests. She was a Bayside cheerleader, a member of the swim team, and president of the school's Fashion Club. (Do schools actually have those???) She even designed her own clothing line. After all, that's how she got accepted in to the Fashion Institute of Technology, isn't it?

Lisa adored fashion, and all things animal print, especially leopard. She strutted her stuff in bold patterns, dresses, and blazers. Bright colors were also constants in Lisa's wardrobe, as she loved being the center of attention in eye-catching looks.

According to Lisa, an outfit wasn't finished until it was properly accessorized, which is why she regularly hats, belts, and lots o' jewelry. She typically adorned her feet with colorful cowboy boots or boots with a heel.

Always one to keep up with the latest fashion trends, here is what Lisa Turtle would sport in 2009:

Episode 2: Saved by the Bell's Jessie Spano

Jan17

Never one to put up with sexism or littering, Jessie Spano hung around with the coolest crew at Bayside, and dated the captain of the wrestling team, A.C. Slater. As Class President, she took her studies seriously. And, she did have that caffeine pill addiction. ("I'm so excited...I'm so scared," anyone?)

Either way, when it came down to Jessie's fashion, she was all business. This brainy feminist often donned blazers, and button-up blouses. High-waisted jeans and brown ankle boots were not strangers to Jessie's look.

She was not afraid to partake in denim-on-denim fashions. This eco-princess relied heavily upon earth tones to complete her look, and was a fan of large, statement earrings. She often held back her curly locks with headband, but only so her hair wouldn't get in her eyes while she was studying.

So, what would Jessie Spano wear today?

Episode 1: Saved by the Bell's Kelly Kapowski

Jan16

She was the girl-next-door and the most popular girl at Bayside. Kelly Kapowski was Saved by the Bell's pompom-toting, kitten-loving, perky homecoming queen. She stole the hearts of Zack Morris and A.C. Slater, and even her sleezy boss, Jeff.

Despite her elevated status among her peers, her fashion sense was understated. She was feminine and demure She often preferred white Keds to high heels, and solid colors to patterns. Denim, was a favorite of the brunette bombshell's.

Her romantic spirit drew her to embrace pinks, florals, and sleeveless tops, while her all-American nature placed her in denim and flats. Kelly would sometimes experiment with bold looks, but usually just ended up opting for low-key style in episodes that would follow.

I got to thinking about Ms. Kapowski's fashion sense, and what it would look like today.

Behold, my picks for Kelly's look in 2009:

Saved by the Bell 2009 Style

Jan15

My obsession with Saved by the Bell started in elementary school. I'd always loved it. When I snagged my first issue of Bop with Mark Paul Gosselaar (Zack Morris) on the cover, I launched into a full-fledged SBTB frenzy. Adorned on this former fourth-grader's walls were pinups of the Bayside cast. I owned all of the dolls, the board game, pillows, the comic book, the book series, the soundtrack, videos--I had it all. Basically, I was obsessed.

I am still a die-hard fan of Saved by the Bell, and often dream of finding a hangout quite like The Max.
Since I spend nearly every morning munching on cereal while watching Saved by the Bell, I have become keenly aware of the outfits.

This is not a recent event, however. I've always noticed their clothing. It's just now that I started thinking about what the kids from Bayside High would be wearing in 2009.

And so, my girls of Bayside fashion trilogy was born. In the next three days, I will post three "episodes," one for all three girls. Read on to find out what I think Kelly, Jessie, and Lisa would wear today.
