Sara Claire & Esther

Oct29

Manhattan-based independent designers, Sara Jordan and Aimee Wolk, are putting a whole new spin on recycling.

Their vintage-inspired line, Sara Claire & Esther, features embellishments, buttons, trims, and fabrics that are re-purposed from thrifted or vintage garments. The feminine looks are reminiscent of childhood tea parties or fashion expeditions through mother's or grandmother's closet.

And what's more? Their Fall 2009 collection is making me swoon! In shades and tailoring that can only be described as elegant, classic, and whimsical rolled into one. Check it out for yourself:

10 Second Wardrobe Makeover: Classy Vintage

Jul20

Dear reLYME,

I recently got my first out-of-college job as a ninth grade teacher. I'm very excited about my new career, but a bit worried about my wardrobe. I always have this vision of teachers wearing hideous, plain clothing. I love wearing vintage, and would love to continue wearing vintage, if possible. But, how can I make it look a bit more grown up and classroom-ready?
-Miss Mod

Dear Miss Mod,

Don't worry your pretty little head: You don't need to surrender your style in order to be an effective teacher. However, since you are a new teacher, you still do have to work hard to impress your administrators, and that often means looking the part of a professional. A teacher myself, I understand the fear that you feel: that one day, you are going to become one of those matronly teachers who wears boringly bland, and often downright, frumpy frocks, but this doesn't have to happen.

The important thing to keep in mind is that you do need to stand apart from your students. If you look too cool, sadly they might regard you as a cool big sister rather than their grownup teacher. (Trust me...this DOES happen.)

So, how to keep your flair for all things vintage, while still looking the part of an educational mastermind?

Trade in the a-line pinafores and jumpers for dresses with a more grown up silhouette. Then, throw a cardigan or blazer over them. Add a pair of tights and some flats or pumps, and voila! You still maintain your style, while mainaining order in the classroom:

Try on some of these dresses for size (all available from Modcloth.com):

Now, go teach your heart out!

Get This Makeup Look Fast: Duffy

Jul19

Welsh singer/songwriter Duffy is known for more than just her airy vocals and mod style. She's also know for her classical beauty. And even though the songstress knows how to make her makeup look dramatic with bold black liner and mascara, Duffy keeps her makeup very simple, so as to achieve the perfect amount of pretty.

To get a look like Duffy's with only four products (after applying a base), it's all about the neutrals:

The Land of Chocolate Milk and Honey

Apr09

As springtime inches closer, and my closet refuses to share another sweater or heavy jacket, I start to get excited knowing that it's time for my favorite part of the season: spring dresses.

And this season doesn't have to be all about pastels. Sometimes, it's good to foreshadow fall by donning chocolate browns and honeyed yellows in the early spring months.

I found my way to an online-based boutique, Ruche, that offers some of the world's most darling vintage-inspired dresses. The best part are the prices!

Check out two of these cuties, and enjoy carefree spring days without breaking the bank:

bowtie tuxedo dress, $44.99

Honey bee collar dress, $52.99

Vintage Fluevogs on Sale this Weekend

Mar13

If you live in New York, or even if you've visited, you know the value of a good shoe. In fact, if the city streets hate your shoes, you're going to know it. That's why when I heard the shoe brand I dubbed 'the essence of comfort' and also 'the essence of art' announced a sale in their New York store, I nearly fainted. That's right friends, it's Vintage Fluevogs sale time at John Fluevog on Prince and Mulberry.

I've fallen in love before, but this was ridiculous. Rows and rows of cute and classic (because these things will last forever...scouts honor!) shoes on sale...calling my name.

In the end, I only chose one pair:

BUT, I heard that they will bringing out more styles throughout the weekend, so rest assured, I'll be back.

For this weekend only, March 13-15, you too can partake in a little slice of shoe heaven. Sandals for $29, Shoes for $39, and Boots for $59. Happy shopping, for you and the NYC sidewalks!
