Sugarcoated: Sweet Coats for a Chilly Winter

Jan01

I remember last winter, cropped coats were everywhere, and I shuffled through the bitter chill in my long coat. I refused to buy a new shorter coat since mine was warm, however. Then, mine was 'accidentally' thrown into the wash and, long story short, it's now a cropped coat.

Bottom line is this: long overcoats are back as evidenced by celebs like Halle Berry and Stella McCartney:

To face the colder months ahead, I'm weighing my options for a heavy coat. Here are a few of my faves:

French Connection, $300

Banana Republic, $211

J.Crew, $150

All That Glittens is Gold

Jan06

On chilly days, it's often essential to keep your hands warm, while still being able to function. You know, selecting the right key on your key ring, checking your iPhone, giving the bird to someone who cuts you off in traffic, the usual.

One of the sure fire ways to keep your paws toasty is with glittens, a glove/mitten hybrid. They're nothing new, but after wearing off the fingers on my old gloves, and feeling like a dejected bear in my mittens, I've decided to for a pair of merinos from J Crew:

And if $25 for a pair of gloves is a bit out of your price range, because believe me, it's more than likely out of mine, you can try an adorably colorful and thrifty alternative, like these from Forever 21:

Now, go grab yourself a hot chocolate!

Stay Warm Faux Sho'

Oct27

Recently, a friend of mine, knowing that I am anti-fur, asked my opinion on whether or not she should buy a vintage fur coat for chilly New York City nights. This got me thinking about faux fur. Maybe it isn't as warm as the real deal, but it's cruelty free, and will warm your shivering bones to their core.

From vest to coat, here are four faux fur options to keep you toasty in cooler months ahead:

Forever21 - Urban Faux Fur Vest, $24.80

Topshop - Leopard Print Faux Fur Coat, $160

Express - Faux Fur Cropped Coat, $168

Fred Flare - Faux Fur Isabelle Coat, $153

Fall's Best Friend: Infinity Scarf by The Limited

Oct25

I've always been a fan of a good scarf, which is funny as I'm a native Floridian (with a short time spent living in NYC.) I am a firm believer that a scarf can practically spruce up any outfit. As the months get colder however, it's important to combine fashion AND function.

The Limited Infinity Scarf accomplishes both tasks beautifully.

I saw scarves like this all over the place last winter, but none of them seem quite as fantastic as this one. (Even my dear friend, Sarah from Style IT has one!)

In either a chunky version (above left) with open stitches available in three colors or a shaker version (above right) available in many colors, the Infinity Scarf is guaranteed to be the perfect warm companion to your chilling fall (and even winter) months!

Oct25

Time to strap on those boots, ladies! So which style will you rock this fall? Whether you like riding boots, over-the-knee boots, or even booties, there are plenty of fall-ready styles to choose from and Piperlime has them all.

Here are four of my picks:

Vince Camuto Cassandra in Dark Slate, $169

Marc by Marc Jacobs in Cognac, $485

Nine West Sheriff in Brown, $129

Taylor Momsen hits NYFW in NARS

Feb23

Gossip Girl's Little J may have abandoned her smokey eye, but in real life, Taylor Momsen's smokey eye is going strong. In fact, she attended the F/W 2009 Marchesa and Anna Sui shows this Fashion Week in NARS cosmetics. NARS Makeup Artist, Sharon Brown, recreated Taylor's now-signature look for these events.

Here's a step-by-step guide to making over your face a la Ms. Momsen:

Skin:

· Mix NARS Firming Foundation in Deauville and NARSskin brightening serum to create an even base with a subtle glow ["She certainly doesn't need the firming benefits of the foundation, but I love the texture," explained Sharon]

· Apply NARS Duo Concealer in Custard/Ginger as needed

· Blend NARS Cream Blush in Penny Lane into cheeks

· Highlight cheekbones with a soft blend of NARS Blush Duo in Hungry Heart

Eyes:

· Line the top and bottom lashes with NARS Eyeliner Pencil in Black Moon

· Smudge Black Moon over entire lid ["For Taylor's eye makeup, the darker the better," said Sharon.]

· Apply slate blue side of NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Underworld for a pop of color

· Layer NARS Single Eyeshadow in Night Flight, using cobalt blue pearls to accentuate Underworld

· Top with a light dusting of NARS Single Eyeshadow in Cyprus

· Highlight brow bone with NARS Single Eyeshadow in Aybssinia

Lips

· Line lips with NARS Lip Liner Pencil in Tonga (Summer 2009)

· Apply NARS Lip Gloss in Sweet Revenge for sheer color (Spring 2009)

Bring Out Your Inner Muse: Smashbox's Muse Spring 2009 Collection

Jan27

Every spring, after the trees shaken off the remnants of snow (I never see this being a Floridian and all), something amazing happens. Yes, everything becomes wonderful and sunshine-y again. But, it's more than that. New fashion and beauty collections are released. This spring, there is something I'm so excited about, I think I might just spill over!

Smashbox's Muse Spring 2009 collection makes my heart sing. I love Smashbox. That's no secret. But this collection looks like so much fun, and it is very wearable. The colors are very sheer and simple, PERFECT for spring. And, as always, it's cruelty free!

The whole concept behind the collection is centered around one's muse. To emphasize this, the packaging is reminiscent of an artist's supplies. The eyeshadows and eyeshadow brush look like a paintbrush and palette, and the cream eyeliners (yes, cream!) look like charcoal pencils. And, you guessed it, lip glosses resemble tubes of paint.

Here's a a look at the new collection, available now:

Personally, I'm most excited about the Hybrid 2 in 1 Luminizing Primer. After a dull winter, my skin could definitely use a visual pick-me-up. The cream liners are exciting, too. (I haven't tried these yet!) This collection is a must-have, and I plan to get my hands on the whole lot soon.

Hot Cocoa

Jan10

Winter time always makes me think of one thing: a big mug of frothy hot cocoa.

Although I typically prefer to whip up my own soy version of this classic seasonal beverage, there's one thing I know for sure--nothing else can warm me up quite like this chocolaty drink.

My hot cocoa frenzy has inspired me to compose a winter outfit for the season. Although it's a layered blend of browns and neutrals, looking at it makes me long for cold evenings in the park.

Friday Favorite Five 9/19

Sep19

No, I have not posted in a while. Yes, I've been a bad blogger. Yes, I'm dying to get back to blogging. The fact of the matter is, aside from not having Internet in my home until tomorrow, I'm planning a reLYME redesign AND switching servers. Needless to say, things are rather hectic right now. (Reminds me of that episode of Saved by the Bell where Lisa ran up her dad's credit card, and had to do both a closing sale and work at The Max to pay him back. Nothing but chaos!) Changes are in store...more photos, more updates, more giveaways, more everything! I promise, very soon!

At any rate, here are some of my favorite posts of the week. Enjoy!:

*Style maven, Gala Darling touches on a very serious note with an article on the quarter-life crisis.

*Dapper Kid makes me long for the upcoming days of hot cocoa, mittens, and scarves.

*Cupcakes and Cashmere investigates the trendy high-waisted skirt with The Hills star, Lauren Conrad.

*iPhone genius, Meebz, created the most adorable Paul Frank theme for iPhone Winterboard. Download it! I did!

*Belle Maison inspires bloggers go vintage at home with these vintage-inspired baubles.
